The Challenge

The site sits on a part of a farm and included two barn conversions as well as three new units. The developer was keen to use a brick type on the new units that would be very much in keeping with a rural, farmhouse aesthetic and complement the existing bricks on the barn conversions, whilst also being distinct from the existing buildings. Meeting the criteria of the planners was important as Mears Ashby is an old village with buildings such as the Grade II* listed Jacobean Manor House which sits less than a mile from the farm, dating back to the 1600’s.

The Solution

Several bricks from the AAB “Retro” range were considered. The developer felt that the tumbled stock bricks from the range would achieve the desired aesthetic. After building sample walls with the bricks, the developer finally decided that the Florida worked the best with the chosen mortar that they intended to use.
